🎶 Jemima’s Music Aptitude Journey 🎶
Jemima is preparing for the 11+ Music Aptitude Test for Hockerill Anglo-European College, Moulsham High School, and The Hertfordshire & Essex High School – and she’s loving every moment of it with our Music Aptitude Mastery course!
She especially enjoys exploring sound through fun games and creative activities that deepen her musical understanding and listening skills.
Designed to prepare children for selective music places, our course covers all four key MAT components – Pitch, Melody, Rhythm & Texture – with expert guidance, interactive slides, and real sound-based exercises.
What is the 11+ Music Aptitude Test?
The Music Aptitude Test (MAT) is part of the admissions process used by many UK and Australian secondary schools offering music places. It is designed to assess musical ability and perception, focusing on listening skills rather than instrumental training. This means no formal music lessons are required to succeed — the test is not instrument-specific.
If your child is applying to schools such as Parmiter’s, Queens’, Rickmansworth School, St Clement Danes, Watford Boys and Girls, Croxley Danes, Ashmole, Dame Alice Owen’s, Tiffin, Wilson’s, Marylebone, Twyford, Camden School for Girls, Herts and Essex, The Coopers’ Company and Coborn, Bristol Cathedral School — or many others — preparing for the MAT is essential.
Our 8-week Music Aptitude Mastery Course is a proven, step-by-step programme designed to give your child the tools and confidence to succeed in the MAT.

There are 4 sections to the MAT:
1. Pitch (20 questions)
Two notes will be played, one after the other. The student must determine whether the notes were the same both times, or if the second note was higher or lower than the first.
3. Texture (20 questions)
2, 3 or 4 notes will be played at the same time. The student must be able to recognise how many notes were played.
2. Melody (10 questions)
A melodic sequence of 5 notes will be played. Then the 5 notes are played a second time, either exactly the same as before or with a change to one of the notes. The student has to determine whether the melody was the same both times, or if it changed, which one of the 5 notes changed the second time.
4. Rhythm (10 questions)
A short rhythm of 4 beats will be played. Then the rhythm is played again, either exactly the same or with a change in one of the beats. The student has to determine whether the rhythm was the same both times, or if it changed, which one of the 4 beats was different.

“Bea has been my daughter's music and piano teacher for almost three years. In addition to her talent as a musician, she has the ability to motivate her students and organise her curriculum so that the student acquires knowledge at their own pace and in the way they learn best. Her enthusiasm, her gift for teaching, her patience with children and her ability to know when to challenge and when to offer the student space to create their own music is extraordinary. This past year she also prepared my daughter for the Watford Grammar (SWH Consortium) 11+ Music Aptitude Test (both the Listening and Performance tests) and after a lot of work and effort between my daughter and her, the result has been great - my daughter got 42 out of 45 points. I also recommend her classes because she is always there for us, always professional and kind. We love her!”
