West London Free School Music Aptitude Test: What Parents Need to Know
About the West London Free School Music Aptitude Test
The West London Free School (WLFS) Music Aptitude Test for Year 7 entry is designed to identify musical potential, not just formal instrumental training. Children do not need to play an instrument to succeed, and there is nothing to prepare or bring on the day.
As long as your child has a strong love of music and enjoys listening and responding to sound, the school actively encourages applications.
This test relies almost entirely on aural awareness, making it especially important that candidates are comfortable singing back melodies and clapping rhythms accurately.

What Is Being Tested at West London Free School
The WLFS Music Aptitude Test is short but highly focused. It assesses natural musical listening skills, not music theory or performance polish.
1️⃣ Pitch Perception (Singing Back)
Children will be asked to:
Listen carefully to melodic patterns
Sing them back accurately
This means:
Pitch accuracy matters
Musical memory matters
Confidence matters
Because the test is entirely vocal, it is essential that candidates are used to singing complex melodies, even if they are not confident singers. The test is about accuracy, not vocal tone.
2️⃣ Rhythm and Pulse Awareness (Clapping Back)
Candidates will also be assessed on:
Clapping rhythmic patterns
Showing a secure sense of pulse
A key challenge for many children is learning to distinguish between pulse and rhythm:
Pulse = the steady underlying beat
Rhythm = the pattern played on top of that beat
Children who can feel and maintain a steady pulse while clapping changing rhythms tend to perform more strongly.
Why Strong Aural Awareness Is Essential
Because:
There is no written paper
No instrument is used
Everything is done by ear and voice
…this test strongly favours children who have:
Practised singing back increasingly complex melodies
Experience clapping rhythms of varying difficulty
Confidence responding immediately to sound
This strong emphasis on aural awareness, accurate singing, and rhythmic precision is similar to the demands of the Tiffin School Music Aptitude Test, where students are also required to sing back complex melodies and clap increasingly challenging rhythms with complete accuracy.

It is particularly well suited to children with natural musical instincts, even if they have had limited formal tuition.
Final Thoughts for Parents
The West London Free School Music Aptitude Test is highly competitive. In 2025, approximately 225 candidates sat the musical aptitude test, competing for just 12 music aptitude places. This level of demand means that strong aural skills, confident singing, and secure rhythmic awareness are essential for success.
Preparing through regular singing, clapping, and focused listening is the most effective way to help children show their true musical potential.
