Rickmansworth School – Music Aptitude Test Overview


If you're applying for a music aptitude place at Rickmansworth School through the SW Herts Schools Consortium, here's a quick guide to what to expect from the two-stage selection process.

Music Places Available: 24

Stage 1: Listening Test

The first stage is a multiple-choice listening test with 60 questions, lasting about 45 minutes. It usually takes place after school in the main hall, using professional audio equipment.

Test Date: Monday, 7 September 2026

Results Released: Thursday, 17 September 2026

Test Sections:

Pitch – Identify whether the second sound is the same, higher, or lower.

Melody – Spot the changed note in two similar five-note tunes.

Rhythm – Compare two short rhythm patterns.

Texture – Say how many notes (2, 3, or 4) are in a chord.

For Stage 1, Rickmansworth School uses the standard Music Aptitude test. This test format is also used by schools like: Moulsham, Chancellor’s, Dame Alice Owen’s, South West Herts schools, Twyford, Tiffin, Ealing Fields, Ada Lovelace, Herts and Essex, Liverpool College.


Stage 2: Performance Audition

Shortlisted candidates are invited to perform a prepared piece (up to 3 minutes) in front of a panel of experienced music teachers.

Audition Dates: 21–25 September

Results Released: Mid October 2026

Scoring (Out of 45):

• Accuracy (15)

• Musicality (15)

• Communication (15)

Note: The difficulty of the piece and music grades are not factored into the score.

Performance Info:

• One piece only, sung or played.

• No personal accompanists – bring sheet music if needed.

• Arrive 10 minutes early to warm up.

• Backing tracks are allowed (via Bluetooth or CD).

• Acoustic piano, keyboard, drum kit, and music stands provided.

• Bring your own amp, cables, sticks, etc., if required.


Marking Reviews and Appeals

Listening Test: You can request a review after results are published.

Performance Audition: Mark breakdowns aren’t provided. If there were exceptional circumstances, you may raise them during the Secondary Transfer Appeals process.
