What Is the 11+ Music Aptitude Test?

Many leading schools use them to award music scholarships or specialist music placements. The 11+ Music Aptitude Test is a specialist entrance assessment used by certain UK grammar and state schools with a music specialism.

Unlike graded instrument exams, this test does not assess performance ability. Instead, it measures a child’s natural musical listening skills — also known as musical aptitude.

What Does the Standard Music Aptitude Test Assess?

Although formats vary slightly between schools, most UK tests assess four core components:

1️⃣ Pitch

  • Can your child hear which note is higher or lower?

  • Can they detect small changes between sounds?

Pitch tests measure sensitivity to frequency differences — not instrument skill.

2️⃣ Melody

Children listen to short melodic patterns and identify:

  • Which note changed

  • Whether a phrase was altered

  • If two melodies are the same or different

This tests musical memory and pattern recognition.

3️⃣ Rhythm

Students must:

  • Recognise rhythm changes

  • Identify missing beats

  • Compare rhythmic patterns

Strong rhythm skills rely on internal pulse awareness and listening precision.

4️⃣ Texture

Texture tests measure how many notes are played at once:

  • 2 notes?

  • 3 notes?

  • 4 notes?

This is often one of the trickiest sections — and one of the least practised.

Do Children Need To Play An Instrument?

No.

Many successful candidates:

  • Do not play an instrument

  • Have never taken graded exams

However, trained listeners often perform better because they are used to analysing sound carefully.
